Antimicrobial resistance, antibiotic prescribing practices and antimicrobial stewardship in South Africa: a scoping review

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. A scoping review in South Africa explored antibiotic prescribing practices and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives. The study found that South Africa has measures in place to combat AMR, but inconsistencies were found between private and public health sectors, lack of adherence to guidelines, and limitations in AMR education among healthcare workers and students. The majority of the articles were primary research papers.
